I'm located in NYC and I've tried very large centers like Preschool of America on the upper east side - which was too impersonal and had a really high turnover. Nannies - who all spent their time with my kid locked in the stroller so they could talk on the phone for the time they were in the park(!!!), and 2-4 child home daycare providers - might as well call it TV care for the quality of stimulation my son received. So finally I found a group family daycare home run on a preschool model. The teachers were all licensed and experienced in the 2 locations the owner runs on the upper east side, and each location has no more than 12 children with 3 teachers, I haven't found anything like it anywhere else, its called Building Blocks Playgroup located on 100th and first and 95th and 3rd. My son is learning reading and math, great arts and crafts, and has fun field trips too, he never was so happy to be dropped off in the morning before, and we have had some really horrible separations before!
Their rates were really low for full or part time care compared to anything local, which was (and still is) massively helpful.
I have discovered that the problem isn't day care, it's finding the RIGHT day care.
